CommArt in the king’s wake

19/01/2009

Krantenknipsel

HASSELT Nv CommArt International, a young UHasselt spin-off, is currently taking part in the king and queen’s state visit in Estonia as only company in Limburg .

Together with seven other companies, CommArt is part of the economic delegation of the FEB, which represents the Belgian business world. Those 7 are Deme - Dredging International, Port Authority Brugge-Zeebrugge, De Smet Engineers & Contractors, Spano Group, Mobile -For, Coris Bioconcept en Progenus. CommArt International, founded in 2007, commercializes communication products internationally that result from the research at the Centre of Applied Linguistics of the UHasselt.

“One of the spearheads of our research is the measurement of the intercultural communication problems and –needs of foreign speakers”, says professor Martine Verjans, co-director of CommArt. “Based on such communication profiles, we develop interactive learning modules for specific target groups, such as export managers.” In clear terms: as an export manager, you have to negotiate continuously with business partners from different regions. Aside from the foreign language, you also have to understand the culture of the person you are speaking with. A Frenchman is not a Walloon and defiantly not a Canadian. CommArt offers interactive learning modules that teach you to deal with important cultural nuances. Verjans: “We want to support as many target groups as possible at the most efficient way, but at the same time optimize the complementarity between university and business world." NV CommArt International was the only company from Limburg that was invited to participate in this state visit. Ann-Pascale Bijnens, director of Tech Transfer UHasselt: “A nice example of how we can propagate the innovation dynamics in Limburg through the creation of academic spin-offs.
